This month's question comes from Lena, who writes:

Q:  This winter weather is the worst!  How can you look good and stay warm?  It took me hours to shovel my car out after the last snowstorm, and I nearly froze.

A:  Think layers.  When I'm going to be out like that, I wear tights, silk longjohns, then pants; wool socks and woolly insoles in my boots; silk long-sleeved underwear, a thermal long-sleeve top, and one or more cashmere or wool sweaters.  I also wear silk glove liners, cashmere-lined gloves, earmuffs, a hat, scarf, and a down jacket.  Yes, I look like the Michelin Man, so I try to use some color to pull it all together.  For example, black jeans, black boots, a teal-colored coat, and lime green scarf and gloves.

The idea of the layers is that you can add or subtract as need be.  Polarfleece and wool are good choices; cotton is not - once it gets wet, it stays wet, which is not good in the cold.
